The University of Tabriz, the second oldest university of country started its activities in 1947 with two faculties of Literature and Medicine. It is now one of the 10 top  universities in Iran.

 

Currently, the University of Tabriz enjoying 21 faculties, 10 Research Centers, several Centers of Excellence, Technology Units, International Campuses and its branches,  is one of the greatest educational and research centers in Iran.

 

In terms of organization, there are 5 vice-chancelleries with a number of other units managed directly by the chancellor.  The vice-chancelleries are as follows:

The University of Tabriz, with its unique scientific facilities in the northwest of Iran, provides its researchers with advanced labs in different fields, having 24000 students, 800 academic staff members, more than 300,000 hard copy books, 800,000 soft copy books, many  valuable hand written books, several computer and internet sites, 21 journals and membership of E-Journals.

Moreover, the University of Tabriz has been active in the international realms. It holds academic relationship with different and important universities of the world, such as France, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Cyprus, Thailand and so on. It has also signed 90 MoU with universities worldwide. Additionally, UT has an active presence in the International Association of Universities (IAU), International Universities Council (IUC), and Association of Caucasian Universities (KUNIB).

 

University of Tabriz has dedicated 145 martyrs in the cause of the Islamic Revolution goals, out of whom 22 were martyred while supporting the Fronts of Right against Wrong at the site of Engineering Faculty Workshop within Campus . With five anonymous martyrs now buried on campus, the university is also known as "Mashhad al-Shuhada" (Place of Martyrdom) to Iranian universities.

 

                                                                                                                

 

Faculties:

 

1- Faculty of Agriculture:

 

The faculty of agriculture of the University of Tabriz is the second Higher Educational Center in the field of Agricultural, which started its activity in 1955 after the Faculty of Agriculture of Tehran University.

 

This faculty has 114 academic staff members, 10 Departments, 61 majors and 2253 students and is one of the most important faculties of Agriculture in the country.

 

2- Faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering:

 

Faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering started its activity as an independent Faculty in 2011.

 

Now, this faculty has 14 academic staff members, 5 Departments, 5 majors and 284 students.

 

3- Faculty of Chemistry:

 

After the faculty of Sciences was divided into several faculties in Academic year 1990-1991, the faculty of chemistry started its activity.

 

Now, this faculty has 862 students, 41 academic staff members, 5 Departments and 14 majors.

 

4- Faculty of Civil Engineering

 

The faculty of Engineering was developed into three faculties in 2003, one of which was Civil Engineering. It has 47 academic members and 1068 students studying in 6 departments and 14 majors.

 

5- Faculty of Economics, Management and Business:

 

The Faculty of Economics, Management and Business was detached the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2011.

 

It has 24 academic staff members and 730 students studying in 2 Departments and 15 majors.

 

6- Faculty of Education and Psychology:

 

Teacher Training Center was established in 1950 at the vicinity of the faculty of Persian Literature. The Center was renamed Faculty of Education and Psychology in 1970.

 

Currently, the faculty provides educational services for a total number of 1221 students with 27 academic staff members. It enjoys 3 Departments and 21 majors.

 

7- Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering:

 

The Department of Electrical Engineering started its activity at the former Faculty of Engineering in 1958. This faculty started as an independent faculty in 2003.

 

The faculty has 54 academic staff members, 7 Departments, 24 majors and 1333 students.

Up to now, as many as 20 professors UT are recognized as Exemplary and Distinguished professors and researchers countrywide. Additionally, a great number of its academic staff members are ed as Eternal Figures, top scientists of Islamic Countries, one-percent top scientists of the world, who are now holding key positions in different academic societies all around the world.

 

Student affairs

 

Campus of the university (6/000/000 m2), enjoys an exceptional vast green areas with trees, shrubs, and blue birds chirping every, casting shadows on inner streets, creating a pleasant atmosphere in every season to soothe every soul .

 

The campus creates a calm atmosphere, in which there are dormitories, dining halls, markets with bakery, book fair, dry cleaner, photo gallery, well equipped gyms, cinema, counseling centers, health center, drugstore as well as cultural centers. The campus is like a town, which have all facilities for primary needs of students.

 

8- Faculty of Emerging New Technologies

 

Activities to establish The Faculty of Emerging New Technologies commenced by 2006 and it\'s official educational and research activities started 2008.

 

The aim and the objective of the establishment of this faculty were to create trans-disciplinary fields. It has 16 academic staff members and 90 students studying in 4 departments and 3 majors.

 

9- Faculty of Geography and Planning:

 

The department of Geography is one of the oldest departments at the University of Tabriz. Initially, it was part of a joint Geography-History department at the Faculty of Literature and Humanities in 1953. Later on, with the expansion and increase in the majors of Geography science, at the University of Tabriz, the Faculty of Geography was established in 2011.

 

The Faculty consists of 5 Departments, 31 academic staff members, 24 majors and 749 students.

 

10- Faculty of Law and Social Sciences:

 

Faculty of Law and Social Sciences was detached the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2011.

 

At present, the faculty has 40 academic staff members, 4 Departments, 19 majors and 980 students.

 

11- Faculty of Mathematical Sciences:

 

The academic program of Mathematical Sciences started as a department in 1950 with 47 students. The department of pure mathematics later was developed into the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences which includes 4 Departments. Currently, it has 799 students, 49 academic staff members, 4 Departments and 22 majors.

 

12- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

 

The faculty of Engineering was developed into three faculties in 2003, one of which was Mechanical Engineering. It has 55 academic staff members and 2946 students studying in 5 departments and 19 majors.

According to Leiden Ranking 2014, the University of Tabriz holds 491th  place in world ranking and 2nd place in Iran. Furthermore, according to Thomson Reuters, it is among the one-percent influential universities of the world. 

 

Sport

 

UT gives great importance to Sport, health and joy and thus established high standard complexes for this purpose with well-equipped sport facilities, which are in service round the clock.

 

Moreover, a gym with the capacity of 4000 persons and separate halls for various fields like table tennis, chess, bodybuilding, sauna, Jacuzzi, rock climbing, dart, wrestling, gymnastic, track and field, soccer, martial arts, rollerblades, cycling etc. is specially designed for students.

 

 

 

 

 

13- Faculty of Natural Sciences:

 

The Faculty of Natural Sciences was first founded in 1969 as a department in the former Faculty of Sciences. Later, in 1996, it started its activities as an independent Faculty.

 

Now, the faculty has 42 academic staff members, 3 Departments, 23 majors and 917 students.

 

14- Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages:

 

Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages, formerly called Faculty of Letters and Humanities is the oldest faculty of the University of Tabriz, founded in 1947.

 

In 1989, the former Faculty of Letters and Humanities divided into two separate faculties; namely, the Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages and the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.

 

Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages has 45 academic staff members, 5 departments, 14 majors and 847 students.

 

15- Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences:

 

The Department of Physical Education was founded at the Faculty of Education and Psychology in 1988. The faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences began its activities as an independent faculty in October 2011.

 

At the present, the faculty has 12 academic staff members, 3 Departments, 8 majors and 556 students.

 

16- Faculty of Physics:

 

The Faculty of Physics was first founded as a department in the former Faculty of Sciences. Later, in 1995, this Department was developed into an independent Faculty.

 

At the present, the faculty has 26 academic staff members, 4 Departments, 23 majors and 503 students.

 

Hosting significant conferences, seminars, scientific, research and cultural roundtables is one of the important features of University of Tabriz. For this reason UT has established more than 15 amphitheaters top host national and International events, "Vahdat " auditorium with the capacity of more than 800 persons and halls of the faculty of electrical engineering and computer with the capacity of more than 800 hundred persons are to name a few.

 

17- Faculty of Theology and Islamic Sciences:

 

Department of Islamic Theology was founded in 1995. After establishing several majors, this department turned to a Faculty in 2010.

 

Faculty of Theology and Islamic Sciences has 17 academic staff members, 3 Departments, 3 majors and 100 students.

 

18- Faculty of Veterinary Medicine:

 

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, formerly the College of Veterinary was founded in 1988. First time, The College started with admission of 35 students in Associate diploma level.

 

Presently, The Faculty is training students in DVM. It has 34 academic staff members, 4 Departments, 3 majors and 360 students.

Other campuses and branches of University of Tabriz

 

University of Tabriz is the second oldest university in Iran. Over the years, it has grown into a well-developed high- ranking university on national and regional scales. Universities of Mohaghegh-e-Ardebili, Maragheh, and Bonab once were its branches.

 

Due to increasing demands for higher education in the region this University with one International Campus in Aras free zone , is preparing to establish another one abroad, though it has some other colleges in nearby cities and  an private and self-finance campus as well.
