A Brief History:
International Academic Collaborations Directorate of the University of Tabriz started its activities under the former name of International Affairs Department as one of the sub-divisions of the Research affairs Directorate organized under the Vice-Chancellery for Research before the Islamic Revolution (1979). During the post-revolution era, particularly in the past decade, the radical geopolitical developments in the former Soviet Union, which created fresh opportunities and challenges, urged the university authorities to re-organize available sources and capabilities aiming to enhance international academic presence of the university in the region.
Due to its unique situation, The University of Tabriz has a great potential for implementation of international academic exchange programs with higher institutions and research centers of neighboring countries, namely, Post-Soviet States (Republics) to the north of Iran.
Hence, along with the new policies adopted by the university authorities and in order to address the new academic and international requirements, the International Affairs Department detached from the Research Affairs Office to develop into a larger individual unit under the new name of International Academic Collaborations Directorate in October 2002. Again in 2004, two years later, the Directorate was entirely separated from the Vice-Chancellery for Research, being re-organized, this time, as one of the units active under the direct supervision of the Chancellery Office.
